On the Bollywood thespian’s 90th birthday, we fondly remember the songs the tragedy king metamorphosed on the 70 mm, which continue to enthrall generations even today

Born on December 11, 1922, as Muhammad Yousaf Khan, Dilip Kumar was known as Bollywood’s tragedy king. Besides his suave personality, versatile acting and unforgettable dialogues, Dilip saab’s persona is associated with his soulful music. Although it is difficult to pick the best ones, we choose some that have become immortal.

The first song that strikes you when you think of Dilip Kumar is Suhana safar, one of the all time favourite numbers from the 1958 film Madhumati, sung by Mukesh and composed by Salil Chowdhury. Another semi-classical number Madhuban mein radhika naache re composed by Kumar’s favourite composer, Naushad from the 1960 musical hit Kohinoor, had the superstar do a perfect lip-sync for the raga-based number.

The popular bhajan Sukh ke sab saathi from Gopi is also considered to be one of Mohammed Rafi and Kumar’s accomplished works. The Ram Aur Shyam actor did a fast-paced folk dance for the Ganga Jamuna number Nain lad jain hai, composed by Naushad. The living legend was at his mischievous best in this song. Not to forget Jab jab zulfein teri from Naya Daur where he beautifully romanced Vyjayanthimala and won her heart.

A couple of last movies Dilip saab did before he decided to stop acting was Karma and Saudagar; how could we ever forget the patriotic number Dil diya hain jaan bhi denge and Imli ka boota respectively from these blockbuster films that the veteran actor graced with his larger-than-life persona and endearing trademark smile.
